Robbert "Bobby"'s Story
Life
I was a music major, played clarinet, sax, and flute. While in HS I played with groups such as "The Galaxy's" & "The Blokes" while at Westmoor HS. Then at Bella Vista HS I was in "The Royal Bishops". I continued on in music full time as a performer and was on the road 16 years. I have either performed with or opened up for many major artists of the seventies/eighties. Sonny & Cher, Don Ho, Englebert Humperdinck, Nancy Wilson, Minnie Ripperton, Ohio Players, 2 weeks with Burt Bacharach in Japan, Gary Pucket & the Union Gap, David Foster w/Josh Groban, etc. I spent 3 years performing with The Righteous Bros in their club in L.A. I have been married over 40 yrs and I have 3 sons now, all involved in the arts and sports. I was a music educational rep in AZ and still continue to play professionally with a band I perform in and manage with my wife. We're a 10 - 12 piece band that plays all the stuff we grew up with and some of the new west coast swing music that came out a few years ago. Check out our web site that's listed with Classmates.com. I am now full time with the Barleen's Dinner Show in Apache Junction, AZ, If you're ever in town, come see our show(s) which run from mid Nov - end of April azopry.com or c.c.ryderexpress.com. School
We immigrated to the USA in Aug. of 56. and ended up in a little town called Marysville, CA. Our family after arriving in the USA moved to a dozen different cities in Calf. during my school years. When I was eight years old I saw the movie which starred Steve Allen in "The Benny Goodman" story, somehow I knew what I would end up doing. To this day I'm involved as a musician/entertainer and still love what I do. Went to Village ES, Don Julio, (North Highlands) Tahoe MS,(Squaw Valley) Lincoln MS & HS, (Lincoln, CA) Westmoor HS (Daly City, CA) Bella Vista HS (Fair Oaks) American River College (Carmichael, CA). Competed in the Reno Jazz Festival in 69' and won a full time scholarship to the University of Reno given by judicators Doc Severson and...Expand for more
Don Ellis. I decided to go full time music so I could see the world, so I did. No regrets there.
College
Music Major at American River College Won a Music Scholarship in the Reno Jazz Festival for the University of Reno. Decided to turn pro, and hit the road for the next sixteen years. Rubbed shoulders with some of the big names in the music industry during my years on the road and after settling in Anaheim, CA performed with the Righteous Bros. for three years. Still having fun with it all.
Workplace
I am now full time back into music now my kids are grown and out of the house at the Barleen's Dinner Show and loving what I do. I was an educational rep for one of the largest music stores in Arizona. I dealt with music educators and kids everyday. Some of the highlights for me is doing clinician work and teaching improv to the advanced players or helping the beginners get a good start on their instruments. Please support the arts in school, too many school districts are trying to "cut" the arts as a way of solving their money problems when they need to cut the fat in administration...poor choice, when you consider it a proven factor that the students who fare the best in academics are those who are involved in music. As of 2013 I'm back doing what I love and that is performing full time with the Barleen's Dinner Show.
Military
I did not serve in the military, while I was in high school the band I was in The Royal Bishops played and entertained at more Air Force bases then you can shake a stick at, I thought I was in the service...also years later our band C.C. RYDER EXPRESS play for our Veterans every year here in Arizona and we love our men and women who serve us so valiantly. At one point I was classified 1A or A1 (can't remember) and thought I would be drafted, this was during the Vietnam war, so I learned to fly single engine aircraft so if I did get drafted I could be a pilot in the armed services.
Now I'm a grandpa and in one month I'll be 71 and still doing what I love to do....music.
